Naturalist author reveals tricks to avoid bug bites in wilderness

ERIN, Ont. - There’s a way to deal with nasty insects in the wilderness, but it may not be to every camper’s liking.

In his new book “The Explorer’s Guide to Algonquin Park,” naturalist Michael Runtz discusses a strategy he has found to be effective - but adds that he finds it “somewhat embarrassing to share.”

U.S. dollars no longer accepted at Indian tourist sites

NEW DELHI - No U.S. dollars, just rupees please.

In a sign of how the once mighty U.S. dollar has fallen, India’s tourism minister said Thursday that U.S. dollars will no longer be accepted at the country’s heritage tourist sites, including the Taj Mahal. For years the dollar was worth about 50 rupees and tourists visiting most sites in India were charged either $5 or 250 rupees.

Ottawa marks 150th anniversary on New Year’s Eve

OTTAWA - On Dec. 31, 1857, Queen Victoria announced that she had chosen Ottawa as Canada’s capital, over rival cities Kingston, Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City.

Exactly 150 years later - on New Year’s Eve - Ottawa will mark the anniversary with a musical fireworks show dubbed “The Grand Finale.” It kicks off, appropriately, at 18:57.
